Introduce yourself. Who are you? Where are you from?
My name is Illusion I’m a mixing engineer and producer based out of Miami. Originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Fl
How did you get the name DJ Illusion/MixedByIllusion?
This is a throwback lol. When I was young and first started DJing I went by a whole bunch of goofy names. But it was my mother that use to make fun of me saying I created an illusion because I was able to fit in and relate with so many different groups of people. The rest is history.
What’s the first rap single or album you ever bought?
First CD I ever personally bought was 20th Century Masters Edition: Best Of Eric B & Rakim
How much do you smoke a day? What is your favorite strain?
Being in the studio for such long periods of time and dealing with all the anxiety that comes along with it. I would say I smoke my fair share. Lol
There are so many crazy names and you just never know what’s acurate anymore but one smell you can’t fake it that of Sour Diesel
Who is your favorite artist to work with so far?
This one is really difficult to answer. I’ve been blessed to work with some many amazing musicians it’s hard to pick a favorite. But I can say I do prefer working with R&B artists the most. There is something magical about watching a singer create harmony throughout a song.
Who do you think is the most famously known weed smoking rapper?
Without a doubt. Snoop Dogg!
Do you think you could outsmoke Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg?
Hell no. I have a high tolerance but for sure those guys would smoke me under the table.
What is your favorite piece of outboard gear?
My favorite piece of hardware would probably be my SSL stereo buss compressor. Nothing quite adds the glue like harmonic distortion and buss compression
Name 3 plug-ins you can’t live without.
- SPL Transient Designer
Did you go to school to learn engineering?
No, unlike most I took an unorthodox method of entering the big studio scene. I was self taught. But because of that I was always insecure about my knowledge so I would read every book there was regarding recording and mixing.
What is a good piece of advice for up and coming engineers/producers?
Stay consistent. Don’t let life good or bad deter you from following your dreams.
You have 5 releases in the past 2 years with some really great artists. When you work on these songs what is your process and how do you select the artists?
It all starts with the music for me. I make a lot of beats but every once and a while I will play something I absolutely fall in love with. I then sit down and determine the genre of the song and think long and hard which artist would compliment that style of song I also take into account who has yet to do a collaboration with each other. Then I piece it together one artist at a time
